Recently, women have been making significant strides in the world of Formula 1. While historically there has been limited female participation in the sport, a growing number of women are breaking down barriers and making a name for themselves in this male-dominated field. The increasing presence of female engineers, mechanics, and other professionals in Formula 1 serves as evidence of the industry's increasing inclusivity.
In November of 2022, the F1 Academy was launched with the primary objective of preparing and developing female drivers for higher levels of competition. The Academy provides access to resources and professionals within the industry, as well as state-of-the-art facilities that would have otherwise been challenging to access. The launch of the F1 Academy represents a significant moment in the history of motorsports and is a major investment in the future of women in the sport. It has the potential to create a more diverse, inclusive, and sustainable Formula 1.
The inaugural season of the F1 Academy commences this weekend in Austria, marking a historic moment. The event has received widespread coverage, particularly on Instagram. The F1 Academy's official account recently posted a captivating reel showcasing the talented women behind the wheel and outlining the series format.
However, the comments section witnessed numerous men expressing explicitly sexist and disrespectful views directed toward the female drivers and the series as a whole. The comments included sexualizing young women, some even in their mid-teens, as well as perpetuating negative stereotypes. Despite the F1 Academy's establishment to combat sexism in the motorsport community, this issue is still evident. Formula 1 has been working tirelessly to recognize and uplift women pioneers in all aspects of the sport. However, it is disheartening to see that such grotesque views are still prevalent, particularly towards the remarkable women of motorsports.
As an all-female platform, She's On Pole is disheartened by these comments. We unequivocally reject all forms of discrimination and will speak out against it, not just on our platform but also in our niche as a whole. Motorsports and Formula 1 are for everyone, and we must strive to make them inclusive for all, regardless of gender. The #WeRaceAsOne campaign emphasizes this point, and all women have the same right to enjoy the sport as anyone else.
